Our Village
Core Courses
Each day, all students K-8 take math, science, language arts, social studies, health and physical education, and social enrichment. In addition, all courses require students to utilize the computer for research, multimedia presentations, spreadsheets, e-mail, etc. Click here for More on Our Programs.
Social Enrichment
Each day, students participate in at least one of the following categories on a rotating basis: a second language, art, leadership, music, entrepreneurship, community volunteering, and social skills.
- Languages include Swahili, Arabic, Chinese and Spanish. Students utilize the languages while participating in NVA’s Global Village Program. This program exposes the students, teachers, and parents to world cultures in addition to domestic and international travel.
- Entrepreneurship includes identifying consumer needs, developing and producing a product, marketing and distributing the product, bookkeeping, budgeting, business, economics, etc.
- Leadership focuses on the importance of leaders, how to be a leader, public speaking, assertiveness, body language, and allowing students to serve in leadership roles around the school.
- Each student is required to perform a specified number of hours volunteering in the community. Students are taught the importance of helping others and they begin to experience the joy of giving.
- Social Skills is designed to help students to incorporate values such as kindness, honesty, respect, and open communication into their everyday living. Students are taught how to express emotions, how to handle disappointments, and appropriate behaviors for various settings.
Peer Culture
At least once each week, all students have the opportunity to come together to reaffirm the unity of all students at Nubian Village Academy. The time together may be used for song, dance, poetry, display of talents, discussion of school-wide concerns, or planning school-wide activities. These meetings are organized and facilitated by the student leaders of the week. Each student will have the opportunity to facilitate the meetings.
Lunch
Mealtime is an important time for students. At Nubian Village Academy, lunch is provided in a family-like atmosphere.
Students in each class are assigned to be responsible for setting the table, for making sure everyone is properly served, for making sure everyone observes a moment of silence before eating, and for helping to clean the area after the meal. Students interact in conversational tones, and soft music plays in the background.
In addition, high quality, nutritious yet delicious foods and snacks are served. With the variety of ailments that Americans are faced with due to their diets, it is important that we teach healthy eating habits to our students.
Environment
Nubian Village Academy fosters a sense of belonging. The atmosphere is warm, friendly, and organized for learning. Students are met with daily doses of kindness, hugs, patience, and positive discipline. In addition, senses are peaked by the pleasant aromas, music, and art-lined walls. Students, teachers, parents, and the community take pride and ownership in the academy — and it shows!
